What is the best advice you ever received?
The best piece of advice I ever received came from my grandfather. As a boy, he used to tell me, “It takes nothing to be nothing.” This has always reminded me that life is a journey and there’s no substitute for effort and hard work.
What is a fun fact about you?
In 1968 I won the Chicago American Swim Award
If you could have a cocktail or cup of coffee with anyone (past or present) who would it be and why?
My answer here is two-fold: first, I think I’d like to choose George W. Bush to have a beer with. I had the opportunity to meet Bush very briefly once before. He was kind, real and very funny. He just seems like he’d be an interesting person to meet for a beer. I’d also love to have coffee with my mom simply because I just miss her dearly.
What is the most daring thing you’ve ever done?
One of my favorite traditions is going on family vacations with my wife (Dena) and our adult children (Kaylee and Brendan). A couple of years ago, we went great white shark cage diving off the coast of Africa together.
What do you love most about your job?
Building long-term, meaningful relationships.
